Theo whats????

Every discussion of angels brings up the subject of theophonies.  That is a theological term for physical appearances of Jesus Christ in other forms before the incarnation. Jesus Christ is called either “the Lord” or “the angel of the Lord” when He appears in a  theophany.  An example of a theophany is found in Genesis 18.

Genesis 18

New King James Version (NKJV)

The Son of Promise

18 Then the Lord appeared to him by the terebinth trees of Mamre,[a] as he was sitting in the tent door in the heat of the day. So he lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing by him; and when he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them, and bowed himself to the ground, and said, “My Lord, if I have now found favor in Your sight, do not pass on by Your servant. Please let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree. And I will bring a morsel of bread, that you may refresh your hearts. After that you may pass by, inasmuch as you have come to your servant.”

They said, “Do as you have said.”

So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah and said, “Quickly, make ready three measures of fine meal; knead it and make cakes.” And Abraham ran to the herd, took a tender and good calf, gave it to a young man, and he hastened to prepare it. So he took butter and milk and the calf which he had prepared, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree as they ate.

Then they said to him, “Where is Sarah your wife?”

So he said, “Here, in the tent.”

10 And He said, “I will certainly return to you according to the time of life, and behold, Sarah your wife shall have a son.”

(Sarah was listening in the tent door which was behind him.) 11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old, well advanced in age; and Sarah had passed the age of childbearing.[b] 12 Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, “After I have grown old, shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?”

13 And the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Shall I surely bear a child, since I am old?’ 14 Is anything too hard for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.”

15 But Sarah denied it, saying, “I did not laugh,” for she was afraid.

And He said, “No, but you did laugh!”

Abraham Intercedes for Sodom

16 Then the men rose from there and looked toward Sodom, and Abraham went with them to send them on the way.17 And the Lord said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am doing, 18 since Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? 19 For I have known him, in order that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the Lord, to do righteousness and justice, that the Lord may bring to Abraham what He has spoken to him.” 20 And the Lord said, “Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grave, 21 I will go down now and see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry against it that has come to Me; and if not, I will know.”

22 Then the men turned away from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham still stood before the Lord. 23 And Abraham came near and said, “Would You also destroy the righteous with the wicked? 24 Suppose there were fifty righteous within the city; would You also destroy the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous that were in it? 25 Far be it from You to do such a thing as this, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous should be as the wicked; far be it from You! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?”

26 So the Lord said, “If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes.”

27 Then Abraham answered and said, “Indeed now, I who am but dust and ashes have taken it upon myself to speak to the Lord: 28 Suppose there were five less than the fifty righteous; would You destroy all of the city for lack of five?”

So He said, “If I find there forty-five, I will not destroy it.

29 And he spoke to Him yet again and said, “Suppose there should be forty found there?”

So He said, “I will not do it for the sake of forty.”

30 Then he said, “Let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak: Suppose thirty should be found there?”

So He said, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.”

31 And he said, “Indeed now, I have taken it upon myself to speak to the Lord: Suppose twenty should be found there?”

So He said, “I will not destroy it for the sake of twenty.”

32 Then he said, “Let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak but once more: Suppose ten should be found there?”

And He said, “I will not destroy it for the sake of ten.” 33 So the Lord went His way as soon as He had finished speaking with Abraham; and Abraham returned to his place.

Footnotes:

  1. Genesis 18:1 Hebrew Alon Mamre
  2. Genesis 18:11 Literally the manner of women had ceased to be with Sarah
There are three men  that appear here and  it is obvious that one of them is the Lord and the other two are actually angels. Look down to verse 13 and it becomes clear that the Lord Himself was one of three guests.
After Abraham’s times theophanies occurred when the people the Lord appeared to were asleep,. such as Jacob’s vision at Bethel, ( Gen 28:1-17), But God addressed  Moses “face to face” as it were. (Ex33:11)
After the incarnation of Christ, theophanies have ceased.  So say the scholars anyway!
Next time we will cover how angel are organized and what their ranks are.

A little bout Lucifer…..

We have established that angels are created beings, they are spiritual beings, they have supernatural powers that humans do not have. They watch over and guard people, churches and nations. They are God‘s messengers. Billy Graham called angels, God’s Secret Agents.  There are Holy Angels and unholy angels.   Which leads us first to a discussion about the angel Lucifer, which that name means “light bearer”.  Lucifer found it within himself, of his own free will, to rebel against God, and thus became Satan, which that name means, “an adversary”.  Thus Lucifer fell from his position as an Cherub angel, or possibly even an Archangel, commentators have varying views on this. . Lucifer led other angels in his rebellion and they are known as fallen angels, since they also fell from their positions of glory, fallen angels are also known as demons.  Satan is also called by other names:

1. “the god of this age” 2 Cor 4:4

2. “the ruler of the kingdom of the air” Eph 2:2

3. “a murderer and a liar”  John 8:44

4. Abaddon and Appollyon (destroyer) Rev  9:11

5. “Beelzebub, the prince of demons” Matt 12:24

6. “that ancient serpent….the accuser of our brothers”  Rev 12:9

Satan can be resisted (James 4:7) and defeated: Matt 4:1-11; Eph 6:16

A common question is “when did the angels fall?” They fell sometime between creation and satan tempting Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.  That is as close as it can be narrowed down. I will give my opinion as to when the fall of the angels took place, this is my opinion and it only an opinion. I think the fall happened between Gen 1:1 and Gen 1:2.

The History of Creation

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

In verse one we see God creating the Heavens and the earth. In verse 2 we that the earth is without form and darkness  was on the face of the deep. God is a God of order, not chaos, and verse two seems to be to be describing a chaotic state. Something happened between verse one and two that shook the foundations of the earth. I think it was an angelic rebellion and war in heaven.  Lucifer at one time was a Cherub and  led others in the worship of God. God is light and dwells in unapproachable light, yet it is recorded that darkness was on the face of the earth, satan is always represented as darkness. Satan and his rebellious angels were cast from heaven to earth. I think that is the darkness that is being mentioned here, the darkness of the satanic angels.  Again, that is my opinion, and nothing more and nothing less.

The evil angels try to separate believers from God, oppose the Holy Angels in their work, whatever power the evil angels have over man and nature is limited by God. Basically, they are on a leash. Note in the book of Job, even satan was limited in the way that he was allowed to attack Job.

Intro to Angels

Angelology is the orderly statement of biblical truth about  Holy angels as opposed to the study of fallen or evil angels and that is called satanology.  The Bible state that angels, like men were created by God.  Angels are non material spiritual being but can change their appearance and travel in a flash from Heaven to earth.  Angels do not have the ability to reproduce and they are not given in marriage nor do they marry. Angels have no gender.  Their number is constant-  Hebrews 12:22 says:

22But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,

Innumerable company of angels- myriads a great but indefinite number. King David reported seeing 20,000  coursing through the stars.  This could mean angles number in the millions if not more.  Psalm 68: 17

Psalm 68:17

King James Version (KJV)

17The chariots of God are twenty thousand, even thousands of angels: the Lord is among them, as in Sinai, in the holy place.

Angels are mentioned in the Bible either directly or indirectly almost 300 times. The Bible teaches that angels are the oracles of God who give divine or authoritative decisions and bring messages from God to man.  The Bible seems to indicate that angels do not die or get sick and except for those who fell from glory with Lucifer are not effected by sin.

We will discuss angels more next time- I need to cut this short – I have an early get up in the morning. For more on angels catch tomorrows broadcast on ULC Radio from 9-10 pm est.
