Rev 20 Cont

The Great White Throne Judgment

11 Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God,[c] and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works. 14 Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.[d] 15 And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.

It is this passage that breaks down all of humanity into two classes- the saved and the lost.  This passage also contains one of the most personal messages found in all of scripture.  The more we read this passage the more prepared we will be to answer when the roll is called up yonder. Every deed and every motive of every person from every era and every region will have been recorded and will be here in the presence of the assembled universe. This is the day spoken of by Paul in Romans 2:16.

Romans 2:16

New King James Version (NKJV)

16 in the day when God will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel.

The Book of Life contains all the names of the redeemed.  The Great White Throne Judgement only applies to whose names are not written in the Book of Life.

The second death is the final doom at the end. This is not referring to physical death which all of humanity must suffer.  The second death is the lake of fire, where the fire is not quenched,  the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

11 Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them.

The great white throne is a picture of God’s holy rule and judgement.  “the earth and the the heaven have fled..” is a poetic way of describing the burning up of this creation and its related works as found in 2 Peter 3:10-13. There is no place for this sin polluted creation in the new heaven and new earth. (21:1-22:5)

12 And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God,[c] and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books.

The dead, called the rest of the dead in in v 5 are raised and made to stand before God;s throne of judgement. To some, the first resurrection (v5) includes only the martyrs(v4) so that both believers and unbelievers will stand before the great white throne. Others point to the broad promises of to Christians made in the book of Revelation of ruling with Christ(1:6; 2:26,27; 5:10 ) as evidence that all Christians will experience the first resurrection and thus will not have to endure the great white throne judgement. Books refers to  the record of all works done in this life.  Since all have sinned and and fall short of God’s standards (Romans 3:23) the opening of these book would certainly lead to sentences in the lake of fire.

the Book of Life is God’s register of those who are SAVED and is also opened , no one will be judged acceptable based on works, many will be saved by God’s grace received by faith in Jesus Christ. ( Eph 2:8)

The sea is the resting place of unburied bodies. Death and hades not only refers to dying but to existence beyond the grave.  The picture here is of all intermediate abodes of human bodies giving them up to God’s judgement.  While unbelieving humanity is judged according to its works, Death and Hades, the Lord’s final enemy is also destroyed by being cast into the lake of fire. The Second death is is spiritual and eternal, the just punishment of the wicked. The first death is physical dying. Both are included in the overall meaning of the death that came upon the human race because of Adam and Eve’s sin.
15 And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.
Only God’s elect, those whose names are written in the Book of Life will escape the lake of fire. The rejection of the eternal gospel results in eternal condemnation.
