Rev Chapter 21!!! All things New!!

Revelation 21

All Things Made New

1 Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. 2 Then I, John,[a] saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. 4 And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”
5 Then He who sat on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” And He said to me,[b] “Write, for these words are true and faithful.”
6 And He said to me, “It is done![c] I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts. 7 He who overcomes shall inherit all things,[d] and I will be his God and he shall be My son. 8 But the cowardly, unbelieving,[e] abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”

1 Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. 2 Then I, John,[a] saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

This fulfillment of the prophecies found in Is 65:17; 66:22; and 2 Peter 3:13  The word “new” is suggestive not only a second beginning but of freshness as in a fresh start.  This is an eternal renewal that actually has already begun in the believer , Paul uses the same term in 2 Cor 5:17 ” If anyone is in Christ, he is a new  creation. The heaven and earth that is now present was burned up in the great white throne judgement  including the sea,and had “passed away” before the new heaven and new earth arrived.  There will be some features of the present creation in the new   as implied by the description of the New Jerusalem as the Holy City.  This title is applied to the present Jerusalem in 11:2.  The difference in the new eternal state is obvious in that there is no more sea- a major part of the original creation.  We cannot tell if the New Jerusalem will sit on the new earth since all three references describe it as coming down out of heaven.  “Prepared as a Bride” is the imagery of Christ’s Church being prepared for the “the  marriage…. of the Lamb.”  Christ’s Bride is the redeemed inhabitants of the Holy City.

And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God.

Here God is described as dwelling with His people.  This brings to mind the incarnation, that Jesus did in fact, ” Become flesh and dwelt among us”  And is a fulfillment of the promise that God will dwell among His redeemed people. An identical promise is made to Israel in Ezekiel 37:27,28.

And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain   , for the former things have passed away.”
5 Then He who sat on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” And He said to me,[b] “Write, for these words are true and faithful.”

wipe away every tear from their eyes- fulfills the promises made in 7:17 and in Isaiah 25:8.

there shall be no more death….no more pain- Goes far beyond the promise of 7: 16, which promises freedom from hunger, thirst and scorching heat.

“for the former things have passed away.”– echoes both v 1 and 2 Cor 5:17. The believers rebirth through faith in Christ,  brings newness to that person’s life, but it is only in the eternal state that God will make all things new.

6 And He said to me, “It is done![c] I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts.-” It is done” echoes the voice from the throne in 16:17  that proclaims the wrath the completion of the wrath of God that was poured out on Babylon.  Here the completion of new creation by Him who is the Alpha and Omega of all things is the focus.  Water of Life may be recalling Jesus references to living water in John 4:14 ; 7:38, in connection with eternal life and life in the Holy Spirit.  This water is also mentioned in 22:1. A similar offer of God’s grace to him who spiritually thirsts is made in 22:17.

7 He who overcomes shall inherit all things,[d] and I will be his God and he shall be My son.

He who overcomes will not only inherit the specifics mentioned in 2:7,13,17, 26-28; 3:5, 12,22,  but ALL THINGS!  The best and most wonderful part of this inheritance is that the believer will be a SON( a person who is a rightful heir)  of God forever.  Sonship is a special honor associated with the Davidic covenant and includes privileged intimacy with God and the authority to rule. ( 2 Sam 7:14)

8 But the cowardly, unbelieving,[e] abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”

This is a list of the characteristics of the unbelievers , those who do not have faith in Christ and are destined for the lake of fire , eternal death, after God’s final judgement. All those whose names are not written in the Book of Life are judged according to their works and are shown to be worthy of endless death.  (ROM 6:23)

Read the next two sections and meditate on them and I will cover each section one at a time. Over the next few days.

The New Jerusalem

9 Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls filled with the seven last plagues came to me[f] and talked with me, saying, “Come, I will show you the bride, the Lamb’s wife.”[g] 10 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me the great city, the holy[h] Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, 11having the glory of God. Her light was like a most precious stone, like a jasper stone, clear as crystal. 12 Also she had a great and high wall with twelve gates, and twelve angels at the gates, and names written on them, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel: 13 three gates on the east, three gates on the north, three gates on the south, and three gates on the west.
14 Now the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the names[i] of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.15 And he who talked with me had a gold reed to measure the city, its gates, and its wall. 16 The city is laid out as a square; its length is as great as its breadth. And he measured the city with the reed: twelve thousand furlongs. Its length, breadth, and height are equal. 17 Then he measured its wall: one hundred and forty-four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of an angel. 18 The construction of its wall was of jasper; and the city was pure gold, like clear glass. 19 The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with all kinds of precious stones: the first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald, 20 the fifth sardonyx, the sixth sardius, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst. 21 The twelve gates were twelve pearls: each individual gate was of one pearl. And the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.

The Glory of the New Jerusalem

22 But I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. 23 The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it,[j] for the glory[k] of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light. 24 And the nations of those who are saved[l] shall walk in its light, and the kings of the earth bring their glory and honor into it.[m] 25 Its gates shall not be shut at all by day (there shall be no night there). 26 And they shall bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it.[n] 27 But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes[o] an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.
