Ok, this is the third time I have started this over the last two days. Not really struggling with what to write but with sitting still long enough to write! maybe suffering from cabin fever! Anxious, restless, and the old tired insomnia is back- maybe time to get the ambien refilled- ugh! But I do sleep better with it. Anyway, we have been discussing 1 Peter and we are almost through chapter 3 and just finished up discussing how husbands and wives are to relate to each other. The next few verses seems to me to actually be a continuation of that discussion. Lets take a look at verse 8-12 in 1 Peter chapter three. This is a continuation of the previous verses dealing with how husbands and wives are to treat each other and relate to one another, Peter know moves to how we are to relate to our brothers and sisters in Christ- the other members of God’s Family. As I look at the first two verses I am reminded of the Boy Scout Law. There were twelve point to the Boy Scout Law, Lets see I cam remember them without cheating!
A Scout is:
.8 Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous; 9 not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing. 10 For
“ He who would love life
And see good days,
Let him refrain his tongue from evil,
And his lips from speaking deceit.
11 Let him turn away from evil and do good;
Let him seek peace and pursue it.
12 For the eyes of the LORD are on the righteous,
And His ears are open to their prayers;
But the face of the LORD is against those who do evil.”
8 Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous;
“Be of one mind”- This is one reason that church attendance is so important- that at least once a week you are with people that think like you do and share in the love and joy that Christ brings into our lives. We are to care for our own, the church family may be even more important and influential in some lives than blood relatives- many times that spiritual bond is much stronger. Simply put Peter is saying be nice to your brothers and sisters in Christ.
9 not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling,
Peter here is encouraging Christians to act LIKE the Lord. Jesus endured suffering and ridicule in silence. He trusted the final outcome and that justice would eventually prevail to the Ultimate Judge.
but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing.
Peter knew that our natural and human tendency was to want to get even with those who would offend us and do us harm. We should, as followers Christ, and return good to those who hurt us. Jesus said to pray for our enemies, to give them food, to give them drink, ect…
that you may inherit a blessing
Christ will reward us for any suffering that we endure in His name.
Take some time to meditate on these verses
